I thought Toastmasters would help me overcome my fear of public speaking, and it did.  But it did much more than that. The confidence I gained in that area allowed me to also learn how to support others in the club through positive feedback, to mentor others, and to learn leadership skills.  All of these new abilities have helped me in all facets of my life.  As well, the club has developed friendships over the years; I always look forward to the meetings!

I used to be really anxious if I had to make a presentation to my fellow staff members at a staff meeting at work.  Now, I experience only mild anxiety or none at all.  Also, I feel more comfortable working with my bosses.  Receiving and giving evaluations of speeches at TM has helped me to have more confidence about myself at work.  In particular, I take evaluations of my performance more in my stride, and way less personally.

It is an evening of inspiration, humour, friendship; an opportunity to get super tips on public speaking and a chance to practise in a safe encouraging environment. Now, I can hardly believe it, after 1 year I feel more relaxed and am able to speak without shaking. I was so scared to talk in a group that I did not speak much and when I had to my mouth got so dry that I physically couldn’t speak. I was always concerned that I would not remember the exact words I had planned to say. A year and a half later I have learned that if I study the subject on which I am to speak I don’t need to memorize every word. I can now stand at a meeting and give a seven minute speech and I can even be the chairman. I have gained far more than I ever expected and have made good friends along the way.

Toastmasters has been a very rewarding experience for me!   I have been able to improve my public speaking skills in a safe fun environment. The greatest benefit I have gained from Toastmasters is the ability to think quickly when speaking in group situations.  I always look forward to our club meetings as I leave inspired.
